Uploading Constraints and Supported File Types
Please see the table below for information about uploading files to different modules within BuildingLink.
Saving Documents in the Best Format
When saving a document or image, you may have the option to save files in the following formats: Excel, Word, JPEG, PNG, PDF, etc.
Excel and Word documents will generally be very small because they are text based. You should not have an issue with files of this type conforming to BuildingLink size limitations. However, saving a document as a Word or Excel file will require your residents to have access to Word or Excel when viewing that document.
PDF documents are generally larger than Word or Excel files, but are great for protecting the text of your document -- residents will not be able to edit the text of the document after opening it. PDF documents can generally be opened on almost any device, so this is a popular choice when saving and uploading documents to BuildingLink. Since PDF documents do tend to be larger, you may need to compress the file to match our size requirements.
All image files (JPEG , PNG, etc) tend to be large. Typically, JPEG is the smallest image file type, so you may want to save images in that format.
Reducing the Size of PDF Documents
To reduce the size of a PDF document, use this PDF Size Reduction Tool. On the PDF Size Reduction Tool website, simply choose the document you'd like to compress from your computer and follow the instructions.
Compressing Image Files
You can quickly compress an image file by changing the format to a JPEG. To do this, open the file, go to File, Save As, and choose JPEG from the drop down menu of file types. After choosing JPEG, make sure to rename your file, save it to your desktop where you'll be able to find it easily, and then upload the new file to BuildingLink.
Compression can help in many cases. However, some files will still be too large and will require resizing for compatibility with BuildingLink.
